Potsdam Artist Uses Backyard As Studio

William Beebe uses his time painting as an opportunity for expression harnessed with free emotion and movement, but he sees himself as more than just an action painter.

"I'm trying to communicate a useful energy that viewers can use in their lives," he said.

With his backyard as an art studio, the vigorous sweeping strokes of dripping paint that Beebe applies to the canvas in layers, usually using one, sometimes two colors at a time, eventually take on a brilliant visual experience.

It often takes days, weeks and even months to finish what become explosive mixtures of paint, colors and patterns.

"I know I'm past finished when it stops looking good," said Beebe.

Using a variety of vivid colors, Beebe spontaneously jumps over the work in progress - dribbling and smearing paint onto the canvas at hand - creating a visual masterpiece of raw emotion, energy and action.

While Beebe's techniques are similar to those used by painter Jackson Pollock in the 1950's.

His creations, using an almost rhythmic style, make the drip art paintings stand by themselves.
