Power Restored to Most Parts of the North Country

National Grid reports that a handful of customers are still in the dark, after as many as 14,000 were without electricity Friday afternoon.

As of 8:00 p.m. Saturday, National Grid's web site showed fewer than 15 customers without electricity.

The utility's efforts came as temperatures plunged across northern New York.

Almost all the outages were in St. Lawrence County, with a few in northern Jefferson County.

Our report from late Friday...

In St. Lawrence County, thousands of customers were without electricity, particularly in the Ogdensburg and Canton areas.

The Salvation Army in Ogdensburg opened a shelter Friday evening.

It's located at the corner of Franklin and Green streets.

County Emergency Services asked people who needed assistance to call 379-2292.

The largest pockets of people without power in Jefferson County were in the Perch Lake and Theresa areas.

National Grid said it expects to restore power by late Friday night.
