Preparing the Seaway for Winter

Tools

It's that time of year again.

The U.S. Coast Guard is in the process of removing almost 1,300 buoys, beacons, and other navigational aids from the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Seaway system to prepare for winter.

The Guard says it pulls the aids to protect them from ice and other weather damage during low traffic times on the waterways.

Crews began the work in mid-October, and plan to finish up by December 28th.
