Pro Hockey Team & Watertown Face Off Over Locker Room Issue

For the 1000 Islands Privateers to bring their game to Watertown, the issue of locker room space must be resolved.

"We're at the point where we're pretty much on the same page with everything to date, with the exception of locker rooms," said team owner Nicole Kirnan.

The two locker rooms with showers at the Watertown arena are in high demand.

"With minor hockey and with high school hockey, they're quite busy," said Erin Gardner, superintendent of Watertown's Parks and Recreation Department.

But the team isn't leaving this problem for the city to solve.

It has pitched a possible solution.

"We have looked at bringing in a trailer and placing it at the back of the arena and that would provide a fourth locker room option," said Kirnan.

The trailer, placed outside the arena, would be at the team's expense.

But the Privateers want other hockey groups to be the ones that use it.

However, the city's offer is for the Privateers themselves to use the trailer.

The city is expecting an answer in the next few days.

"We just want to come to a solution so we can call Watertown home," said Kirnan.

Meanwhile, the clock is ticking on the Privateers finding a new home.

Their league starts making out schedules in about a week.
