It was smiling faces and full tummies for kids attending the kickoff event for the Food Service Program in Jefferson County.

More than 100 children packed the Carthage Recreation Center for hot dogs and healthy snacks.

The program provides meals to children during the summer months when school meals are not available.

"We've been doing the program for about 30 years and within that 30 years, we've done over 300,000 meals," said Mary Mathewson of the Food Service Program.

The Summer Food Service Program is nationwide.

There are 17 sites in Jefferson County.
