Progress Made To Bring Hockey Team To Watertown

The city of Watertown and the 1000 Islands Privateers hockey team may have overcome the biggest hurdle to bringing the team to town.

A new proposal was agreed upon Thursday.

Under the plan, the Privateers would be allowed to designate one of the Fairground Arena dressing rooms with showers as the teams "home room".

The team would then vacate that room for high school teams and scheduled tournaments.

"We've agreed to bring in a storage unit and clear out of the room on certain agreed upon occasions," said team owner Nicole Kirnan.

The city council will be briefed on the progress of the discussions Monday night.

If lawmakers approve, staff will draw up an official contract between the city and the hockey team that will still require council approval.
