Protecting Vets from Predatory For-Profit Colleges

The ever increasing number of veterans and service members working toward a college degree now have new help to make sure they're getting enough bang for their educational buck.

President Obama signed an executive order Friday that cracks down on predatory for-profit colleges that collect tuition dollars through the G.I. Bill without providing meaningful education in return.

The order requires colleges to provide vets with a "Know Before You Owe" fact sheet and to provide counseling to help students finish their degree even if they move or deploy.

It also helps fight dishonest recruiters by strengthening rules about who can come on base and makes it easier to file complaints.

"When our men and women in uniform succeed, our country succeeds. They have our back - now it's our turn to have theirs," Obama said during his weekly address Saturday morning.

A law that addresses the same issue is pending in Congress right now.

Meanwhile the clash continues over how to pay for a measure that would keep student loan interest rates from doubling this summer.
