Railroad Reconstruction Plan Continues

A strategy to rebuild and re-open the defunct 46-mile railroad from Newton Falls to Carthage will move forward despite the owners of the Newton Falls Fine Paper Mill's decision to sell or liquidate the mill.

North Country Regional Economic Development Council Co-Chair Tony Collins described the setback as "a minor hiccup" in the effort to get the rail line rehabilitated and working again.

Collins says a $10 million state economic development grant to assist with the reconstruction work on the rail project is not in any jeopardy.

"Economic development is not for the faint at heart. It really requires dedication, committment, (and) perseverance. And we bring all of those elements to help move this forward," Collins said.

"We certainly need the rail line," he added.

Revitalization of the rail line would not only benefit the paper mill should it be sold again but several other businesses in Lewis and Jefferson Counties.
