Rare George Washington Papers Found At Historical Society

The Jefferson County Historical Society has uncovered two documents bearing the signature of George Washington.

An official from Christie's Auction House confirmed their authenticity and said they are very rare.

The museum believes the papers were donated in the 1960's as part of a large collection of documents.

It was only recently that the museum discovered the famous signatures.

"We were going through some of the boxes, just kind of cataloging them and seeing what the contents were because it wasn't very well documented. We opened a box and it was marked miscellaneous documents and there were the two George Washingtons," said Lenka Walldroff, curator of collections.

The museum also has signatures from Abraham Lincoln and several other 19th century presidents.

They will all become part of a President's Day exhibit in late February.
