Regular Deer Hunting Season Now Open

It is opening weekend for regular deer season in the North Country, and that meant hunters were out in full force.

The state Department of Environmental Conservation opened up the season in all three counties Saturday morning.

Hunters are allowed to use a rifle to hunt deer from dawn until dusk during this season.

We caught up with one hunter in the town of Champion before he went out on night watch, and he says he's just excited to get back in the tree stand again.

"I got a doe tag this year so I'll probably go every day, or at least four or five times a week...It's my favorite time of year," said Austen LaBarge.

The regular season for deer will last until December 2.

Meanwhile, state officials have issued an emergency rule to keep certain parts of deer and elk killed by hunters in Pennsylvania out of New York.

The state Department of Environmental Conservation says the move is necessary because of a confirmed case of something called "chronic wasting disease" in Pennsylvania deer.

Under the new rule, hunters are prohibited from bringing the following parts of  white tail deer and American elk into the state:
-brains
-eyes
-spinal cords
-intestinal tracts
-spleens
-some lymph nodes

Meat that doesn't include the restricted bits on this list may still be brought into New York.
