Republican Congressional Candidates May Debate Saturday

After Kellie Greene challenged Matt Doheny to a debate, both sides waited.

The only invitation that came - sort of - was from remote Wanakena in St. Lawrence County.

"I don't think it was a formal invitation. I believe that we just received a phone call asking us if we were interested in attending a debate there," said Doheny spokesman Jude Seymour.

Greene says she got less than that - a voice message from someone saying they were the debate moderator.

There was no further information, including a place and time.

"It's kind of hard for me to go to a debate if I don't know where it is and when it is," said Greene.

That debate looks to be off.

But now the Jefferson County Young Republicans Club has stepped up to the plate.

"As Young Republicans, we want to put the best candidate forward. Obviously as Republicans we want to defeat Bill Owens," said Jeremiah Maxon of the Jefferson County Young Republicans Club.

The Young Republicans debate would be this Saturday somewhere in Watertown.

"That is absolutely acceptable to us and we did tell them that we in substance and in theory would absolutely accept that," said Greene.

"We stand ready to debate, we're excited about a debate, so we will debate," said Seymour.

Still to be decided is exactly where in Watertown the debate would be held.

The rush is on.

With the primary timetable moved up this year, the time frame for debates has as well.
