Doheny Sweeps Primary For The 21stMatt Doheny swept the Republican primary for the 21st Congressional District Tuesday night, beating Kellie Greene by a better than 2 to 1 margin. Doheny now moves on to the general election against incumbent Congressman Bill Owens. Both men are facing a Congressional district that is slightly different, with more territory to the east and without Oswego County. Doheny led Greene 8577 to 3396 at 11 pm, with the vote all but complete. Only two districts were left to be counted. Turnout was extraordinarily low, below 7 percent of registered Republicans. During Doheny's 2010 primary against Douglas Hoffman, 19 percent of registered Republicans voted. The biggest factor may have been the timing of the vote this year, coming in June instead of September. Doheny urged voters to 'Come join my team.' Doheny, addressing supporters at the Italian-American Club in Watertown, posed a series of questions and answers. For example, he asked "Is the country going in the right direction? If you don't think so, come join my team." "People remember what happened two years ago when Bill Owens got elected with the smallest percentage of any Congressman in he country," Doheny told 7 News. He pointed out he will have the Republican, Independence and Conservative party lines in November. "We're going to work hard for the next four months to get our message out." Doheny lost to Owens in 2010 when he did not have other lines on the ballot. Greene called Doheny to congratulate him, but declined to endorse Doheny. "I don't think people need to hear what I think." "I'm very excited for the future, whatever that may be," she said. Also Tuesday night, attorney Wendy Long has won a three-way Republican primary to take on Kirsten Gillibrand in this fall's race for the U.S. Senate.
