Homes Could Be Evacuated If Oswegatchie Dam Fails

Residents downstream of a small dam on the Oswegatchie River might have to be evacuated if rising waters compromise the structure.

The South Edwards Dam is owned by Brookfield Power and is located on Guiles Road. Brookfield officials are at the scene to monitor the situation and have begun the first phase of an emergency plan.

St. Lawrence County Emergency Services director Michael Lecuyer tells 7 News the river rose a tenth of an inch overnight and is expected to go up even higher.

Lecuyer says if the dam is compromised, residents living along the river in Fine and Edwards might have to be evacuated.

LeCuyer says the dam is stable for the moment and is allowing excess water to spill over the top.
