Ritchie Hosts EEE Clinics

State Sen. Patty Ritchie is hosting two vaccination clinics for horses to prevent a mosquito-borne brain infection that killed 12 horses and a little girl last year in central and northern New York.

The first clinic is Thursday on an Amish farm in the  town of Heuvelton.

Ritchie says the location was chosen because almost half the horses killed by the virus are owned by Amish families.

The virus, eastern equine encephalitis (EEE), is 90 percent fatal among horses. The vaccine is almost 100 percent effective in preventing the disease. But there's no vaccine for humans.

A girl, 4 year old Maggie Sue Wilcox of the Oswego County community of New Haven, died last year from the disease.

Ritchie obtained funds in the state budget for aerial spraying, mosquito larvicide for property owners, improved detection, and discounted vaccines from vets.

Thursday's clinic is 6 to 8 p.m. at the Herschberger Farm at 210 Irish Settlement Road.

The second is 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the town of New Haven highway department.
