The southbound lane of Interstate 81 was closed in the Adams - Adams Center area for more than an hour Thursday afternoon because of an accident involving several vehicles.

The road reopened at 5:30 pm, according to the Jefferson County Office of Fire and Emergency Management.

A spokesperson for the state Department of Transportation said a Jeep rear-ended a snow plow.

The driver of the Jeep was taken to a Syracuse hospital with cuts to the face.

Four other vehicles had to swerve to avoid the crash.

As a result of the accident, Route 81 between Exits 41 and 42 was closed starting at 4 pm.

Rob Krone from 7 News Sports, on scene, said the accident was south of Michaels Road, toward Adams.

At the time of the accident, snow had been falling in the area at a rate of 1 to 2 inches an hour, said 7 News chief weathercaster John Kubis.
