Roxanne Burns, who was arrested last week on drunk driving charges, said Tuesday she will remain a member of the Watertown City Council.
Burns issued a written statement in which she said she planned to "continue to fulfill all my personal and professional responsibilities and obligations, including those as a member of the City Council, to which I was elected by the people of Watertown."
The 51 year old lawmaker was charged with aggravated driving while intoxicated after leaving Ives Hill Country Club Thursday night.
Police said Burns was attending a party for retiring City Court Judge James Harberson.
According to police, Burns allegedly drove into a railing at the club and left the scene.
She was charged with leaving the scene of an accident in addition to the DWI.
Burns was arrested, taken to the public safety building, then later released.
Police said her blood alcohol content was .20 percent.
Burns is scheduled to answer the charge in city court on December 21.
The following is Burns' statement:
Last week I was involved in an accident at the Ives Hill Country Club when my car struck the handrail at the entrance to the club. Subsequently, charges were filed against me, and I have now entered the legal process.
Like any other individual, I have the right of due process under the law. Upon the advice of counsel, I have been instructed not to make any public comments which may affect those rights. The legal process will run its course, as it does with any other citizen. I will continue to fulfill all my personal and professional responsibilities and obligations, including those as a member of the City Council, to which I was elected by the people of Watertown.
This is a very difficult time for me and my family. I thank so many of you who have reached out to me with words of encouragement and support. I will make no further statements regarding this matter until the legal process has concluded.
