Rumble Strips Now In Center Of Some Highways

It may come as a jolt to your car, but the latest feature to some north country highways could save your life.

Officially they're known as Centerline Audible Roadway Delineators, but you probably know them as rumble strips.

New this year, grooves have been installed in the middle of highways throughout Jefferson, St. Lawrence, Franklin and Clinton counties.

While they may take some time to get used to, officials say it's all about safety - especially when drivers drift into the center or oncoming lanes.

"You get that audible buzz, if you will, once you've crossed the center line," said Mike Flick of the state Department of Transportation.

Officials say, depending on how things work out, more highways may be getting the centerline strips in the future.
