SLU Bell Ringers Honored

The ringing of the bells at St. Lawrence University is a long-standing tradition.

The bell ringers of Gunnison Chapel were honored Sunday with the Heritage Award.

This comes one week after the chapel's steeple burned and then fell to the ground.

The award is given every year by Traditional Arts in Upstate New York, also known as TAUNY.

"This is a really big honor for me," said Janel Smith, a class of 1999 bell ringer.

"For all of the bell ringers, this is a tradition that we really hold very dear and the fact that somebody is recognizing the work that we do and the long-standing tradition is very, very interesting and really very cool," she said.

Even though the bells were not damaged in last weekend's fire, the ringing of the bells is temporarily on hold.
