SPCA Expands With Help From Petco

A major donation for the Jefferson County SPCA sets up a permanent satellite shelter on Watertown's west side.

The Petco store on outer Arsenal Street is undergoing a complete remodel. When complete, it will include 1,200 square feet of space for the SPCA.

That way, the shelter will have dogs, cats and small animals up for adoption at Petco.

It's a $180,000 project, half coming from Petco, the other half from the Petco Foundation.

Petco will also have a budget of $2,500 a month to spend on food, litter and other items for the animals the SPCA keeps there.  There are a couple of costs to the SPCA.

"We'll be staffing the facility and we'll be paying the enormous rent of $1 per year," said Doug Marlow, the SPCA's executive director.

Marlow says the SPCA is extremely grateful to Petco and says this should allow the shelter to adopt out more animals.
