SUNY Canton Readies For Smoke-Free Campus

SUNY Canton student Taylor Zaccaro had been a smoker for three years until he decided to kick the habit this year.

"It was really difficult. It still is difficult. It's a fight every day," he said.
 
Beginning in 2014, SUNY Canton will become a tobacco-free campus altogether.

Zaccaro says he is supportive of the college's plan for a smoke-free environment and hopes the impending policy change helps encourage others to stop lighting up altogether.        

"Tobacco-free campuses are becoming more and more common. They've eventually proven to be an effective method to help people quit," said Benjamin Todd, tobacco program coordinator.
 
The Canton campus has a handful of areas where people can light up as the college prepares for the transition.

"The second-hand smoke on campus has been reduced by the designated areas," said SUNY Canton Health Educator Farren Davis.
 
Some smokers we spoke with, who declined to be interviewed on camera, said they didn't agree with tobacco-free policies, but they have no choice but to comply.
