Safety Without Borders

This holiday weekend, drivers on both sides of the border can expect to see a bigger police presence out on the road.

New York State Troopers will be teaming up with the Ontario Province Police for the "Safety Without Borders" program.

"It's really a unique weekend in that Canada Day is on the first of July, Friday, and then Independence Day is on the Monday, so it's really a four-day weekend, where we expect there will be lots of cross border travel," said Insp. Chris Lungstrass, of the Ontario Provincial Police.

Police on both sides of the border will be cracking down on speeding, aggressive and drunk drivers, and people who are not wearing seat belts.

"We won't be in each other's countries. We will be doing our separate detail," explained Capt. Darrin Pitkin, of the New York State Police. "But what we want everybody to know is - whether you're traveling in Canada or the United States, you're going to see the same enforcement level throughout both countries."

Law enforcement will be out in force on both sides of the border midnight Thursday through midnight Sunday.
