Saranac Lake Builds Ice Palace
It's a must-see each winter!
Volunteers have started building a huge ice palace in downtown Saranac Lake.
It's the centerpiece of the community's annual winter carnival.
Hundreds of large blocks of ice are harvested by hand from Lake Flower.
They're set in place with a mortar made from water and snow.
It takes an entire village to get the job done.
"There's a great sense of community in Saranac Lake. A lot of camaraderie and the community coming together - a couple of restaurants provide food, a gal brings some morning hot chocolate and coffee," said Margaret Worden, a volunteer.
The Saranac Lake Winter Carnival starts this Friday and continues until Sunday, February 10.
After the carnival, the castle will be taken apart.
The ice is then returned to Lake Flower.
