Saturday: Adams Woman Killed In Crash

Tools

An 81 year old Adams woman died after an accident Friday afternoon in front of Salmon Run Mall in Watertown.

Phyllis C. West was a passenger in a Toyota sedan that collided with another vehicle. Jefferson County Sheriff's deputies said Faith G. Bettinger, 69, also of Adams, was driving the sedan and turned left into the path of an SUV driven by Dawn M. Knight, 40, of Watertown.

Knight's SUV hit the Toyota's passenger side, where West was located.  West had to be freed from the sedan. She was flown to a Syracuse hospital where she died, deputies said.

Deputies said the accident happened on Route 3 at the entrance to the mall.

Bettinger, Knight, and two other passengers in the SUV were treated and released from Samaritan Medical Center.

Deputies had issued no charges as of mid-afternoon Saturday, and said their investigation continues.

The Town of Watertown fire department and ambulance squad, Guilfoyle Ambulance and state police all responded to the accident, along with the sheriff's department.

(Editor's note - An earlier version of this report incorrectly placed West in Knight's vehicle, and inaccurately described the collision that took place.)
