An 18 year old Gouverneur Central School senior died late Friday night when he apparently lay down in front of a car that then rolled over him.

Sheriff's deputies said the car's driver didn't know he was there.

Deputies said James W. Gore, 18, of 4127 State Highway 58 in the Town of Fowler was trapped under a car driven by Tyler W. Sargent, 18, of 1235 Route 11.

Deputies said Sargent was attempting to leave Gore's home.

"Unknown to Sargent,...Gore lay down on the ground in front of the vehicle," according to a press release Saturday morning from the sheriff's department.

Deputies, state police, Gouverneur fire and rescue personeel and St. Lawrence County coroner June Wood were all at the scene.

Deputies said alcohol was apparently not a factor, but have offered no other clues about just how the tragic events unfolded, or more importantly, why.

They are continuing to investigate.

Gouverneur Central opened its doors on a Saturday morning to help students and staff members cope with the death of one of their own, just weeks before graduation.

The school will open again Sunday from 1p.m. to 3:30 p.m.

"We have asked St. Lawrence County Hospice to provide grief counseling and we will have our own Gouverneur Central staff members available to support students and other staff members," said Lauren French, Gouverneur Central School District Superintendent.

Officials tell 7 News they're opening the school to allow students to remember James as a promising student who was headed to SUNY Potsdam in the fall.

"We will have the first floor open and various classrooms so that students can either take the opportunity to sit with friends in a large gathering, or maybe to sit in a more private environment with one or two counselors," French said.

Middle and high school staff have been asked to report to work at 7 a.m. Monday:

"So that we can talk about the support we need to have in place for students and for other staff members,"  French said.

French says counseling will also be available throughout the week for students struggling with this tragic loss.
