Saturday: Two Charged In Welfare Fraud Probe

The St. Lawrence County Sheriff's Department charged two Gouverneur residents with welfare fraud.

Eric Sovie, 34 and Heather M. Rider (Stowell), 27, both of the same address on County Route 12, were accused of welfare fraud, third degree and offering a false instrument for filing, first degree.

It wasn't clear from press releases issued Saturday when they were arrested, but both were released without bail to appear again in court in March.

The two "failed to report accurate household income" from April, 2009 through September, 2012 and got food stamps, HEAP and day care benefits they weren't entitled to, according to the press releases.

The benefits amounted to $9,607.
