A Growing Trend in Farming and Gardening: PermacultureMore than 40 people packed a classroom at Cornell Cooperative Extension of Jefferson County on Saturday. A crowd so big, it even surprised instructor Steve Gabriel. "It's people interested in taking their garden passions and their farming passions into more of an ecological mindset, and wanting that information," says Gabriel, a member of the Finger Lakes Permaculture Institute. Attendees were from all walks of life. Some commercial farmers, other backyard gardeners; but all interested in learning to be more sustainable. "I'm tremendously interested in the environment, and the ways that we interact and cause problems that we're not aware of because we don't know the science behind it," said Ann Denny, a workshop attendee. Permaculture is a design discipline for gardens and farms that promotes ecological principles found in nature. The purpose is to create healthy landscapes that meet human needs. Attendees on Saturday learned steps to take to make their growing process more environmentally friendly. Although permaculture isn't a new idea, it's one that seems to be growing in popularity.
