School Recycles Milk Cartons

Saving the environment one milk carton at a time - that's the goal at West Side Elementary School in Gouverneur.

Students have started a new recycling program with the help of Cornell Cooperative Extension.

Instead of throwing away used cartons, the students drop them off in a specially lined can.

Officials say they are filling up one ten pound bag of cartons a day.

"Every child has to have a milk carton on their tray as they come out of the cafeteria so one carton for one child really adds up quickly," said Principal Charity Zawatski.

To make sure no one slips up, the school has even named some students milk carton guards.
