Schumer: Metalcraft Marine Could Double EmploymentSenator Charles E. Schumer says Metalcraft Marine in Cape Vincent could double its workforce, if the company gets some additional help from the federal government. In a statement Thursday afternoon, Schumer said the company is seeking an $800,000 grant to 'renovate and repurpose approximately 9,000 square feet of space.' According to a statement from Schumer's staff, "With this help, the company could double its workforce over the next year as it produces additional high speed fire, rescue, patrol and other work boats in the coming monhs." The money would come from the "Assistance to Small Shipyards" grant program. North country Congressman Bill Owens sent a letter of support for Metalcraft earlier this month. "I ask that you give this application your most serious consideration," he wrote. Last October, the company said its initial hiring would be five to 10 employees. Schumer plans to speak on the issue Friday afternoon at the company's Cape Vincent facility. Read some of our earlier coverage of Metalcraft Marine here and here.
