Schwaller Mum On Shared SUNY Potsdam-Canton President

Outgoing SUNY Potsdam President John Schwaller isn't talking when it comes to his recommendations on whether there should be a shared president between the college and neighboring SUNY Canton.
 
Schwaller and SUNY Canton interim president Carli Shiffner met with SUNY Trustees in executive session Wednesday.

In a telephone interview with 7 News, Schwaller denied signing a confidentiality agreement barring him from talking about whether SUNY Central was considering a shared presidency between the colleges as part of a cost savings administrative realignment.

Schwaller, who last week unrepentantly announced plans to retire in July, said he wasn't pressured or forced to step down as president.

He said both campuses have made "remarkable progress" toward shared services in the last six months.

"It's important for them to study the two campuses, to see our histories, our traditions, and also to look to the future to see what the best orientation would be," said Schwaller.
 
While no one has been named interim president to replace Schwaller, SUNY Provost David Lavalley says the two colleges will continue to work on an administrative realignment over the next three years.
