Driver In 2-Car Crash Charged With Racing

A Theresa man is facing charges for allegedly racing another driver and causing an accident Thursday night that sent a third driver to the hospital.

State police say 17 year old Bret Staie was driving on County Route 21 in the town of Theresa when his car collided head-on with a vehicle driven by 19 year old Kayla Guillermo of Evans Mills.

Staie was charged with taking part in an unauthorized race, speed not reasonable and driving on the wrong side of the road.

Troopers say seat belts are being credited for saving the lives of both Staie and Guillermo when both vehicles overturned.

Guillermo was airlifted to University Medical Hospital in Syracuse where she was being treated for a broken leg and broken foot.

Staie was treated at Samaritan Medical Center for minor injuries.

The vehicle Staie was allegedly racing was not involved in the accident.
