Seaway Officials: "We Need The Ice To Melt"

Tools

For the first time in a decade, cold weather is delaying the opening of the St. Lawrence Seaway shipping season.

The opening of the Montreal to Lake Ontario section of the waterway has been pushed back three days until March 31.

A seaway official says simply, "We need the ice to melt."

However, ice breakers will help the process along.

According to the Brockville Recorder and Times, a Canadian ice breaker is scheduled to begin operations on Saturday.

The March 31 opening of the seaway is about a week later than normal.
