Senate Leader: No Vote On Cuomo's Abortion Proposal

Tools

The Republican leader of New York state's Senate says he won't let Gov. Andrew Cuomo's abortion proposal to the floor for a vote.

Senate Republican leader Dean Skelos says Republicans who share control of the Senate will not expand abortion rights.

Skelos also said Tuesday that Republicans won't change state law to reflect the Roe vs. Wade ruling that legalized abortion because he doesn't think the federal decision will be overturned by the U.S. Supreme Court.

Cuomo has suggested the measures, but Skelos notes the Democrat still hasn't released a bill.

In a radio interview Tuesday, Cuomo said he wants to ensure rights protected under Roe vs. Wade continue if the current, more conservative court reverses that decision.

He said some legislators are trying to avoid the politically difficult issue.
