Should Jefferson County Probation Officers Carry Guns?

The director of probation in Jefferson County is asking lawmakers to allow probation officers to carry guns.

Ed Brown will be making a presentation to legislators Tuesday night.

He says probation officers are dealing with dangerous offenders these days.

He'd like to arm his officers with a handgun to protect them when they're making solo home visits.

"You never know what you're going to walk into, what you're going to find. It's not just the probationers that we have to be worried about, it's family members, it's neighbors. You just don't know what you're going to walk into when you're out there," said Brown.

The Probation Department has 31 officers.

Eighteen of them have requested permission to carry a gun if the legislature gives its approval.
