Sign O' the Times

By Kris Rusho

It won't be the last public hearing about signs and sandwich boards in the village of Alexandria Bay, nor will it be the last rough draft of a law about them.

There isn't much in the code book about signs and sandwich boards, but village officials say regulations are needed to ensure safety and fairness.

The board's most recent draft would eliminate most sandwich boards and various types of signs, but businesses say that can't happen when they work wonders for them.

The spacing between certain stores and the street, including the size of the sidewalk, is different depending on the building and that makes it harder to find a standard that would ensure the fairness the village wants.

Business owners have until November 5 to voice any other concerns to the village board.

Meanwhile, village officials are hoping further insight and comments will help smooth out the rough draft and create a law that works for all parties involved.
