Snowmobiles Take To Norwood Lake This Weekend

It has been 23 years since the Norwood Lake Regatta held its first races.

Back then, it was hydroplane boats. Today, it's snowmobiles.

Pro and semi-pro snowmobile racers will take to the lake's calm waters for a series of high-speed races on Saturday and Sunday.

The Regatta has been a popular fundraiser for the Norwood Lake Association and draws race fans from around the region.

The event also features children's games and a craft fair, but the big draw is the racing.

Racers hit high speeds on their snow sleds with nothing but water underneath.

"Watercross racing, snowmobiles racing at high speeds, creates some dangerous situations," said James McFadden, president of the lake association, "but I can say the years they've been here in Norwood, we've not had a serious accident."

The gates open at the Norwood Beach at 9 a.m. both days. Racing starts at 11 a.m.
