Some City Officials Want To Change Zoning Law -- Again

Tools

After the uproar about Watertown's so-called "roommate law," Mayor Jeff Graham is proposing changing the zoning code back the way it was.

A revision to the zoning ordinance is expected to go to the planning board to restore language that was taken out by the city council in February.

The original change was spearheaded by Thompson Boulevard resident Debbie Cavallario, who was fighting to keep her neighborhood for families.

Opponents said the city was trying to define what a family is and at least one council member says this is a step in the right direction.

"I would like to see the position of city council change -- I don't know if it will -- so that it eliminates the anxiety that the community is feeling," Teresa Macaluso said.

The proposed ordinance also changes the definition of family. It would recognize families made up of non-blood-related individuals.
