South Jefferson Student Wins Congressional Art Contest

An 11th grader at South Jefferson Central School is the winner of the 2012 Congressional Art Competition from New York's 23rd Congressional District. 

Nichole Hess of Lorraine won the contest with her work, "Silver Belles."

The work was selected to represent the region and will be displayed in the United States Capitol Building for one year.

A reception will be held for winners from each district on June 20 in the Capitol Visitors Center in Washington, D.C.
 
The nationwide high school arts competition is held each spring.

The contest is an opportunity to recognize and encourage the artistic talent in the nation, as well as in each Congressional district.

The competition began in 1982 to provide an opportunity for members of Congress to encourage and recognize the artistic talents of their young constituents.

Since then, more than 680,000 high school students have been involved with the nationwide competition.
