South Lewis Residents 'Celebrate' Constable ElementaryIt had all the elements of a graduation ceremony: a packed gym, a slide show - even refreshments. But instead of caps and gowns, there were collages, old yearbooks and stories. It was "Celebrating Constableville," a chance to say goodbye to the elementary school as the South Lewis Central School District chose to close the building to save money. "It was a special day for them and a special day, I think, for everyone," said school board president Barry Worczak. "Taking a look back at all the great things that have happened in this school," Constable Elementary teacher Christine Flansburg said. It's not often a community gets the chance to say goodbye to a school closing. "I've never heard of a celebration like this, and I tell you (it was) really great," Worczak said. Alumni who were there say they're shocked the 83 year old school is closing. "It's the life of Constableville," said Terry Zimmer-Cataldo of the class of 1949. "It always was and it's quite a blow." The event gave alumni a chance to relive some good, and not good, memories. "Oh my goodness, the memories," said Sylvia Gydesen Zeitler of the class of 1945. "There's holes in the gym floor from all the dancing we did!" she said. "We would get on an open sled with horses, we'd go about three miles up to our neighbors, we'd drop off the milk can, then we got on an enclosed bus," Arsa Weiman of the class of 1934 recalled. The doors of the building are officially set to close next week, so, a lot like the stories, the school will soon be a memory. |
