North Country Jobless Rate Drops Compared To Last Year


The north country continued to have some of the highest unemployment rates in New York in June, according to the state Labor Department.

However, the jobless numbers are down from last year at the same time.
St. Lawrence had the state's second highest jobless rate - 9.6 percent, up from 9.2 percent in May.

However, the number was down from 10.8 percent in June 2012.

Lewis County came in fifth with 9 percent unemployment, which was down .3 percent from May and down .5 percent from the year before.

Jefferson County's unemployment rate dropped .2 percent to 8.8 percent.

The jobless rate was 9.4 percent last year.

The statewide jobless rate was 7.6 percent, down from 7.4 percent in May and down from 8.7 percent in June 2012.

- Tompkins County (5.7%)
- Putnam County (5.8%)
- Rockland County (5.9%)
- Yates County (5.9%)

- Bronx County (11.8%)
- St. Lawrence County (9.6%)
- Kings County (9.4%)
- Oswego County (9.4%)
- Lewis County (9.0%)
