St. Lawrence County Officials Discuss Sales Tax Over Dinner

It wasn't your typical dinner party for officials in St. Lawrence County Thursday night.

County legislators met with town supervisors to discuss potential changes to the county's sales tax.

Faced with a severe budget crunch, the county is looking at taking a portion of the sales tax back from towns and villages.

County officials also hope state officials will let them raise the sales tax rate from 7 percent to 8 percent.

Officials say the changes are necessary to avoid major increases in the county's property tax rate.

"The unfairness of the sales tax, that we can't collect what other counties are collecting and thus have to charge our property taxpayers more," said Fred Morrill, chair of the county legislature's finance committee.

Officials say they expect to see an early version of the county's budget within the next week.
