State Grant To Help Put Massena GM Site Back To UseNew York state is helping with the cleanup and marketing effort at the old General Motors Powertrain site in Massena. Brownfields are dormant properties where contamination has impeded redevelopment, turning the properties into economic and environmental drains on localities. Project funding will complement ongoing cleanup efforts in cooperation with the federal Environmental Protection Agency and is addressing on-site soil, surface water and groundwater contamination. Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced Tuesday a total of $3.4 million in grants is being awarded to assist 15 communities across the state affected by contaminated brownfield sites.
