State Parks Expect Busy Memorial Day Weekend

With a forecast of great weather for the Memorial Day weekend, many people will be heading to state parks.

The question is, is there room left?

State parks regional director Kevin Kieff was on the phone on 7 News This Morning.

He says unless you've reserved a spot, there might not be much room left.

"We will be full at almost all of our parks," he said.

"For our last-minute campers that are willing and looking to come out and have a Memorial Day weekend in the park, it might be best if they call ahead," Kieff said.

"Most of our facilities will be chock-full this weekend with the glorious weather we've been having."

The 2012 season will probably be a busy one for the park system.

"We have found that our reservations statewide are up almost 20 percent," Kieff said.

He said that when gas prices are high, people tend to stay closer to home, which helps keep park attendance up.

Kieff says this season will mark the 115th year New York's parks have been open.

Cedar Point park near Cape Vincent is one of the original parks. It opened in 1897.
