Stefanik, Doheny Court GOP Support In Lewis County

For Matt Doheny, it was a chance to explain why he is the best person to serve the 21st Congressional District. Doheny announced he was running for Congress on Wednesday.

Both Doheny and fellow candidate Elise Stefanik attended a  Lewis County Republican Committee meeting in Redfield Thursday night.

"The skill set I possess, my business acumen, my background, really the experience of the district and probably more than anything else my roots here at home," Doheny said. "This is where I grew up. I grew up in Alex Bay."

How will Matt Doheny do against Stefanik? This is Doheny's third attempt at the seat, losing twice to Congressman Bill Owens. Stefanik has received received support from almost all of the Republican committees in the district.

"Which is a testament to the strength of my candidacy," Stefanik said. "I plan to keep earning the support one vote at a time."

The endorsement might not mean much. For example, members of the Lewis County Republican Committee can carry petitions to get any of the Republican candidates on the ballot.

"I'm going to carry both of their petitions," committee member Gary Williams said. "I think we're in a fortunate position that we've got two candidates that can carry the Republican banner forward."

Former St. Lawrence County emergency services director Joe Gilbert is also running. He did not attend Thursday's meeting.
