Strange Bird Takes Roost In LaFargevilleA unusual bird is making itself at home in LaFargeville. David Swift says he first spotted the bird on Monday and it hasn't left his backyard since. "He's got his own personality," Swift said. "He'll primp for you and dance around like he's showing off." Swift says he's never seen a bird that looks like this one. A call to the Cornell University Lab of Ornithology yielded an answer. "It's a breed of domestic pigeon known as a helmet pigeon," said ornithologist Kevin McGowan. "It's not a wild bird," he said. "It's a domestic animal." McGowan says the bird is likely someone's pet. He says it could probably be identified by the band around its foot, if Swift could only get close enough. Swift doesn't know if the bird is male or female, so he just calls it "pretty bird". He's got another nickname for it, too. "I call him 'pooh bird' because he poohs all over everything and today he flew over my head and made a deposit next to my shoulder." Swift said he hopes that's good luck. swift hopes someone will recognize the bird and claim it, but until then, he's happy to give his new feathered friend a home. Most Popular |
