Students Learn About Careers In Public Safety

What is it like to be a state police K-9 handler or a firefighter?

High school students got a first hand look at "Careers in Public Safety Day" at Jefferson Community College on Friday.

The event featured presentations from firefighters, police, corrections officers, emergency managers and paramedics.

But it was the K-9 unit "Theo" that got the most attention.

"K-9 is always a big draw. A lot of kids want to get into the K-9 unit so this kind of brings it to the table for them so they can see what it's all about," said Trooper John Poggi III, a K-9 handler for the state police.

Students also took part in a demonstration simulating a firefighter in a smoke-filled building, trying to make a rescue and find the way out.

The expo also had more routine aspects, like college admission and financial aid information.
