Students Learn About Roller Coasters Using Math & Science

A group of 45 middle and high school students from across St. Lawrence County are at Clarkson University this week using math and science skills to design a computer model of a functioning roller coaster.

The students are involved in several hands-on activities, including air rocketry, problem-solving, and how math and science are involved in roller coaster design.

Clarkson students are acting as mentors.

The program, funded through a state Education Department grant, is seen as a way to help inspire young students to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering and math.

"We've taken something that kids naturally like and are drawn to and we show them the math and science that make it work," said Clarkson math professor Katie Fowler.

"And, actually, the math and science that make it fun and thrilling, as well," she said.

The students will also visit Six Flags Great Escape in Lake George to collect data on real-life roller coasters.
