Students Side Aside Fears To Learn About Snakes

Animal management students at Jefferson Community College got cozy with some venomous snakes on Thursday.

The students handled rattle snakes and cotton mouths and at the same time, learned how to determine their gender. 

Most of the class is studying to become zookeepers.

Wildlife educator Tom Hudak was impressed with the bravery of the students.

"The willingness to push past the fear that they have - there's a lot of fear inherent with snakes regardless of whether they're harmless or not - they're doing a great job," he said.

Hudak also gave zookeepers at the Zoo at Thompson Park a refresher course.

He said the key to working with venomous snakes is to never become complacent.
