T-Shirt Sales To Help Fund Psych Center Efforts

The group trying to preserve operations at the St. Lawrence Psychiatric Center in Ogdensburg is planning to sell t-shirts to help fund its efforts.

The St. Lawrence Psychiatric Center Task Force and the Civil Service Employees Association will offer "Save SLPC " t-shirts starting Friday.

Organizers are asking for a $10 donation per shirt. They will be available at Ogdensburg's city hall.

They'll also be handing out free yard signs.

Task force chairman Chuck Kelly said in a news release that wearing shirts and putting out signs “reinforces the importance of this facility to the north country."

"We need to show that we are serious that the citizens of the north country should have full and fair access to the mental health services that the state is trying to move out of our region to other parts of the state,” Kelly said.

Earlier this month, the state unveiled its three-year plan to create what it's calling "regional centers of excellence" to consolidate services.

Under the plan, the Ogdensburg center would lose an adult unit and a children's unit. It would keep a unit for sex offenders and maintain outpatient services.

People can call the city managers office at 315-393-6100 for more information or to reserve a t-shirt or sign. Organizers say quantities are limited, but more will be ordered.
