Task Force Asks State To Reconsider Psych Center Plan

Tools

The task force that's trying to preserve the St. Lawrence Psychiatric Center in Ogdensburg wants the state to reconsider its plan to move units to Utica and Syracuse.

In a statement from chairman Chuck Kelly, the St. Lawrence Psychiatric Center Task Force is asking the state Office of Mental Health to make the psychiatric center a "Northern Center of Excellence."

That, the statement says, would "preserve three inpatient adult wards as well as three inpatient
children/youth service wards at the center."

The state released a plan earlier this week that would move the adult services unit to Syracuse and the children's unit to near Utica. A confinement facility for sex offenders would stay in Ogdensburg.

Outpatient services will be expanded in Ogdensburg. The plan doesn't say how many jobs that includes.

The state says no layoffs are planned. Employees would have the option of moving with their jobs or retrain for other positions.

The psychiatric center employs over 500 people.
