Teachers Get Educated On New Evaluation System

A teacher's performance in the classroom will be put under the microscope next year as part of a complicated evaluation system designed to improve student learning.

On Monday, close to 300 north country teachers and school administrators met at the St. Lawrence-Lewis BOCES where they were briefed on the new Student Learning Objectives component of the evaluation process.

Roughly 80 percent of the state's classroom teachers will be evaluated under the SLO component.

A videoconference allowed educators from as far away as Tupper Lake and Salmon River in nearby Franklin County to participate.

Officials say while the new standards will be used to measure teacher performance in the classroom, there are still areas of concern:

It will be up to each individual school district to decide how the Student Learning Objectives will be implemented and how the teacher's academic goal for students is measured.
